Dante’s Inferno was the story of the poet’s supposed journey through hell. It was written with such force and sense of reality that Galileo delivered two lectures claiming to have arrived at accurate measurements of Dante’s version of hell. This illustration is from an illustrated manuscript of Inferno by Bartolomeo di Fruosino around the year 1420.
